What This Tool Does
This tool automatically identifies the main subject in your photo using an in-browser neural segmentation model and removes everything else, leaving the subject on a transparent background. The result is exported as a PNG, since PNG is the format that can store transparency — a JPG output can't represent a transparent area.
Background removal works best on images with a clear subject and reasonable contrast between the subject and its surroundings — a product photo on a plain surface, or a portrait against a simple wall, for example. Busy backgrounds, fine detail like loose hair strands, or low contrast between subject and background can all make the result less precise.
Why the Result Is a PNG, Not a JPG
JPG doesn't support transparency, so once the background is removed, the file needs to be saved as PNG (or another transparency-supporting format) to preserve the see-through area. If you need the cut-out subject on a solid color instead of transparency, you can use our built-in background color selector to place the cutout on solid white or a custom color, or use Convert to JPG once you've added a solid background.
Limitations to Expect
Automatic background removal isn't perfect for every image. Fine detail — hair, fur, semi-transparent objects like glass — is the hardest case for any background-removal process, automatic or manual, and edges may need touch-up for a fully clean result on complex images. Results are generally best with a clearly separated subject and reasonably even lighting.
Are My Images Uploaded?
This tool removes the background locally in your browser using client-side WebAssembly and WebGL ML models. Your image isn't sent to any server to be processed, so there's no account to create, no upload wait, and complete privacy for your photos.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does background removal work?
The tool uses an automated in-browser machine learning model (ISNet segmentation) that identifies foreground subjects and isolates them from background elements without sending data to a remote server.
What file format do I get back?
A PNG file with a transparent background, since JPG cannot store transparency.
Does this work on any photo?
It works best on photos with a clear, well-separated subject and decent contrast against the background. Busy backgrounds and fine detail like flyaway hair can produce rougher edges.
Can I put the subject on a solid color instead of transparent?
Yes. You can toggle between transparent and solid colors (such as solid white or custom hex shades) directly in the tool settings, or place the downloaded transparent PNG over any background in your favorite editor.
Can I use this tool on my phone?
Yes, the tool works in any modern mobile browser.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No — all background removal is executed entirely client-side in your browser memory.
